My Learning Life

Cooking was my first love. This is until I burnt a pot. Still, it helped me be creative at home. I love to cook a lot of middle eastern food like falafel and Kabob sandwiches. The problem is getting the ingredients living in a town with a population of 250 people, and one shop that sells nothing but junk food. I decided to start growing my own vegetables, herbs, and fruit. Now, we eat for free. This helped me learn about gardening and growing my own stuff.

The Hebrew language is one of the hardest languages that I have learned in life after living in Jerusalem for 10 years. It was a struggle to find work. It goes without saying, if you cant speak the language nobody will hire you. It took sometime to gather a sentence together. Now I can hold a conversation with someone . It was a hard but it helped shaped my character.

10 years I spent buying and selling art glass. I learned a great deal, and know art glass from Edwardian, Victorian, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Retro, and modern. It was a business that made great amounts of money. I got the chance to travel to France, and to see the Lalique factory and Fenton in the United States. Isle of white factory in England and Medina in Malta. Its one of my passions, and I learned all things about Art glass.

The Bible is a tool for me, and a guide on how to live life with empathy for others. Also, I believe the Bible has given me wisdom on how to overcome certain situations, that I have faced in life. No mountain is to big to climb. I have a disability . I have to reach for strength to finish my work. I can do all things in Christ who strengthens me. The Bible has helped me understand history, and where laws came from. The Bible had educated me on my race and tribe. The Bible is food for my soul

Overcoming my disability has been difficult. My partner was the key to my success. He would tell me,” I can do anything, if I put my mind to it.” Although, I felt low self-esteem and lacked any confidence. I attempted the impossible. It has been a struggle in getting there. There are a number of skills I have used to overcome the bad times. Sometimes it means going for a walk. Praying or reading my Bible. These skills have got me through. I have learned a lot in college.

  1. Very cool that you have developed a love for cooking! I hope with all my heart that I take that skill up in the next couple of years… or my husband better know what he is doing. It seems from your blog that you have done a fair share of traveling and learning new cultures. What has been the biggest life lesson from moving place to place? Do you plan to remain in Nebraska after graduating?

    1. No I do not plan on remaining in Nebraska after graduating. To be honest I do not like Nebreska very much. There is not a lot to do here, and I have struggled with making friends. Also, there are not many jobs here. I plan to go back home to Israel after gradating college.

  2. We primarily cook Indian food in our home as that is my husband’s home country, but before I met him, the list of meals I could cook were very short. Middle Easter food sounds delicious to me with all of the aromatic herbs and spices. I can also relate to learning a new language. My husband’s parents and older family members only speak Hindi, so it is my goal to become fluent. What were your first impressions when you moved to Nebraska? Your time buying and selling art glass is interesting. I have a collection of pulled glass vases and some Fenton pieces, but have never traveled to the factories where they were made. That had to be fascinating.

  3. Middle eastern food is my favorite! I completely understand the lack of ready ingredients in your town. My town is considerably larger than yours and we have a decided lack of ethnic food, outside of Mexican and Chinese.
I love how you integrated your faith in your post. I can tell it is incredibly important to you. You are a remarkable woman, Risa, and I look forward to reading more of your blogs!

I’m really interested in how you found out about Chadron being so far away from home. What made you choose Chadron to further your education?
