Adolescences in a Digital Age

Image result for teens on their phones at lunch

Is the world pushing children to be older than they actually are? Who is to blame, technology companies, or parents? An adolescent used to be around 13 years old. Now the age has moved down to 10 years old. Some of the down falls have come through technology. Madeleine. J. Goerge, and Candice L. Odgers reveals to us in their article, ” The Risks and Rewards of Being an Adolescent in the Digital Age.” Eighty-percent of American adolescents now own a mobile phone, and are texting a staggering sixty times a day.

It is a major concern that it is taking them away from being creative. Plus, what is it doing for their mental health? Adolescents spend around 7 1/2 hours a day on social media. Somethings they spend these hours are on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, snap-chat, playing games, and other platforms. This is due to mobile devices being an easy access to all of the above networks and, what they write and look at is there for the world to see.

What problems will this create for the child’s learning development, and social development? We all have seen this, your on a train, flight, or at the local coffee shop, and at the table a child sitting with their parents. The child is on their phone or iPad, and there is no communication between them. The network has sucked them into a void. Mobile technology has had a negative effect in the world on all young people. Has the mobile phone attached itself on the child? The child feels its part of them. Four out of five teens today own a mobile phone.

Many teens sleep with their phones at night. This can cause problems with their mental health. This can cause going to school with a lack of sleep. It will effect their learning. The Journal from Science Direct, conducted a test. A high percentage of 71.5% out of 6616 adolescents between the ages of 11-12., from 39 schools around London used screen based social media. That is either with the lights on or off. Sleep quality was tested to determine the effects on their health, and quality of life from using screen based media devices.

It is essential for our health that we have enough sleep, and the results suggest that children might have health issues later on in life. Using screen based media devices in the dark, or more than 1 hour every night had staggering results on their health related quality of life. Part of this reason is they lose sleep at night, and stay up longer on the weekends giving themselves no time for recovery.

I think students and children should learn about digital citizenship. For students it is essential. The world has become more dependent on technology. Students need the internet to access their finances, to order books, or to stay in touch with family if there college is far from home, or just speaking to friends on social media platforms.

For children that use the internet, it is essential to learn good digital citizenship for their own protection. Can we learn bad digital citizenship? Yes, we could learn bad digital citizenship. It can open up a whole load of problems. From cyber-bullying, where email may get sent to children with intimidating messages of threats or intimidation. Being Irresponsible on social media, and allowing children to use sites that children should not be looking at is having a lack of knowledge about how to be safe on the internet. What steps can we take to ensure children and students are protected from the above problems?

Steps can be taken at school as well as at home by learning key concepts of empathy. That is by giving knowledge, helping to understand why the person writing these things are writing these things, and understanding without making judgments so quick. Some other steps might include how the internet works, user data, practicing digital literacy, having acknowledging of digital wellness, and having security. What kind of security do students need to know about, and how do they protect themselves?

Some of the ways to protect students are secure passwords, and having a program called, ” Last Pass,” for their passwords. Having a secure app to store important information, and having a higher level of security for emails for online banking. That is without using the same password as their apps that they use for social media. Using common sense media curriculum is a site that can hide personal and private information. “Students should be vigilant on some other aspects of security. These are personal information, photographs, what these pictures contain , property, permission, protection, professionalism, and personal brand, (Davis).” How can we help with these problems for the future? Steps are being made to combat some of these issues.

David Ryan Polgar, who is a writer, speaker( two-time TEDx), and commentator about the ethical , legal, and the emotional impact of technology has put together the digital citizenship summit with college professor, Dr. Marialice B. F.X Curran, to combat these issues to discuss the future of digital citizenship.

DS106 Blog

Image result for ds106

DS106 or Digital storytelling is a course where people can use their gifts or talents to create, and build either by using audio, video, writing, drawing, and photograph. DS106 can be used whether you are at work school or just at home. It can also be used in design. Whether it be your own web page, or creating a sign for advertising. It is an amazing piece of technology. I can link it up to all different sites like, twitter or google reader. It has many topics of assignments. That is either visual or storytelling. I don’t think its all about the technology , but understanding the requirements then adding what technology to go with it to create your work.

If I was to create some work of art, I would have to use the right technology that fits in with that art. What really surprised me is how much information there is out there about many ways to be creative by using DS106 and photography. It is a great example how old cameras could not give the video technology, but with DS106 it has all the elements to create a video along with your photos, and even add audio.

This will inspire more people to create their own master piece, and I think its a great tool for students to use in a digital age for promoting their ideas. The good thing is it can be used in any field such as, language, art, music, literature, films, and many more topics. The disadvantage is it seems to be a lot of work especially if you struggle with the technology side. On the plus side it can further your career. Also, it helps you promote the things you like and enjoy. For example, I like music and the band Pink Floyd. I can create a video of my choice to fit in with the audio, and it is something I would like to try out in the future not for a profession but for a hobby.

Also, I am interested in soccer and I have found many podcasts about this subject. I will be going through this subject and listening to them during my spare time. Before, this week I never listened to a podcast or viewed a digital story before. It is something new to me . I will be using these tools instead of just watching and listening to YouTube as my own source for now on.

Leadership in any sport is essential in the structure of a team. That is whether it be grass roots or professional, and soccer is one of the oldest sports. The first game was played in England on a professional level. This occurred in London on December 19th, 1863, between Barnes FC and Richmond FC.

Since then the game has evolved. Some of the factors that have changed are the rules of the game, how soccer is promoted, the size and shape of the ball, stadiums, how world wide the game has become, and even technology. Today, we have goal line technology that was introduced in 2014. It’s how leadership has changed that caused me to want to focus on one of the greatest managers of all time in soccer.

Alex Ferguson was not a great player, but he found his place in the history book as one of the greatest managers of all time. In the 1980’s, Alex managed Scottish clubs in East Sterling and Aberdeen. This is where he brought discipline to the clubs, and he earned seven trophies. It was surprising in 1986, he joined Manchester United, and he won united a staggering 25 titles in a space of only 27 years when he retired in 2013. Was it a good start that his parents gave him in life that led to his success? No, he already had a degree in business studies, and anyone knows who follows the game, it can be very unpredictable.

Alex knew how to create a team . Hard work will always overcome natural talent when natural talent does not work hard enough. It is all about his leadership skills. Managers have developed new techniques since the beginning of the invention of soccer that have moved the game on. Managers have a lot more pressure today, unlike in the old days where a manager could get away with a few losses, or getting rid of players.

Today its all over social media, or plastered on the front page of a newspaper. During Alex’s generation, he had to deal with players who had drinking problems, violence issues, and rifts with players such as David Beckham. Greg Gordon a journalist who knew Alex said, ” his dedication and loyalty to people around him is incredible. This includes is generosity of both time and spirit that would put most people to shame working in any industry. “

Some of Alex’s sayings shows his mentality and leadership skills. Alex says,” one can play soccer, but practice is what makes you a soccer player.” How did he deal with the rude player, Van Nistelrooy? Most managers would have sacked the player. but he nurtured and protected him . How did he deal with David Beckham? He sold him to protect the image of the club. A smart leader, and a legend. He was not only a manager to the players , but a father and a role model.

For the next part of my project, I will be looking at how social media has had an effect on the game, and has it had a negative or positive impact on the game.

Teens and Social Media

https://tse2.mm.bing.net/th?id=OIP.opvpoBKDWHKdupnrAWYV-gHaHa&pid=Api&P=0&w=300&h=300

Once a close nit family, days out at the park. Maybe, some book reading, artwork, playing games, and learning music. A trip out with mother shopping or some fishing with dad. Somethings teenagers might have done before social media arrived, but what has replaced the family bonding, and what effects does it have on the teenager. According to Dr. Free N. Hess, one main reason for teens turning to social media is  fear of missing out. Whether it be on the pop band they enjoy, or a social media platform there friends were on. He goes on to explain, that an article presented by the BBC, where students were asked in a test not to go on there phone for one week. The outcome showed people felt disconnected and isolated from society. Emma Kenny also wrote an article that teens going on social media platform gave the teens a physiological high, and it becomes a reward cycle. This is to do with how many likes they received, or dislikes that prompts them to delete there past.

Teens are mostly glued to their phones today. They constantly get distracted by social media notifications, and alert messages. It is hard to know how much time teens actually spend on social media. Also, teens are having romantic relationships at a younger age. All of this may cause anxiety for teenagers.

An article by the Guardian Newspaper on you.gov survey revealed  18 percent of young people in the do not think life is worth living. That number has doubled in the last 10 years, as social media has become omnipresent in the lives of young people are critical to the future success of their country. Life in the digital age is difficult for all of us, but especially among teenagers.

Dr. Alan Steelman, tells us some aspects of what goes on in a teens mind that may result in anxiety or stress. He says, ” some factors maybe insecurities of our personal appearances, does my friends like me? Am I attractive enough?”  Also, he says, ” pressure of grades at school.” All are operating in the social media platforms of snap chat, Instagram, twitter, Facebook, and YouTube. The problems occurs when bullies are not just in schools, but after school. As they become keyboard warriors, and can destroy a teens reputation.

Also, from a wall street journal Alan says, “teenagers social media trap teens managing there success online, and it maybe taking a toll on their health.” Social media can lead to problems, and this can have an effect on the whole family. The problem is teens watch everyone else’s social network. but they are not engaging. They lose that social connection.

A teen may follow another teen and become friends, but never get to meet them in person. The network becomes the friends rather than the human. Some symptoms may result in a lack of sleep that leads to depression, mood swings, and irritability. Also, it can take away from fitness and engaging with others.

Independent Learning Project Update

The ultimate goal of a soccer coach is to develop players, and sharpen their talents. It is not just the training of the body. A player does that himself if he is very dedicated. The real challenge is in the mind. In my project, I hope to show some of the techniques a coach might use to train a players mind. In this project, I will be using one of the most successful managers in the world.

Alex Ferguson is a manager of one of the most famous clubs in the world. He is part of Manchester United, which is located in England. I will be looking at some of his training techniques he used. He nurtured a group of teenagers to become successful world stars, such as the likes of David Becham. Combining TED talks on allowing people to be creative, and how this can have positive effects on the soccer field. Some test a coach might face in any sport are the players emotions, and I will be looking at some strategies a coach might use. This is the case for most sports. Whether it be a Olympics athlete, or a soccer player.

All coaches need some knowledge of psychology, and a gift on how to apply it. It is the difference of winning and losing. Most of this takes place on the training ground. Although, most successful managers go the extra mile to become that father figure or role model. Most managers or coaches become successful leaders. There are many things a coach has to think about. Is he good enough? How can I get the player to eat healthy? How can I get this wild side of this player? How can I create a team that gets together? There is probably 100 things that goes through a coaches mind even before he picks his team hurting, firing, buying, and selling. What about great soccer players that have skeletons in their closet? Maybe secret drinkers , drug users, gamblers, or fighters, like a famous French man named Eric Cantona. While playing for Manchester United against Queens Park Rangers, who did a kung foo kick into the crowed, and was banned from playing for half a year? These are some of the things a coach is forced to deal with.

How does a manager deal with those kind of players? I hope to help you see inside, what it takes to become a top coach. How is it some coaches can only last for 1 season? In my study, I hope to take you inside the mind of the coach and the player. Soccer is a mental game not just a physical game. How does a player cope with situations? He may find him/herself on a soccer field, and what does it take to have a winning mentality? Also, I will be adding the history of soccer. Its a game that dates back to the 1800s, and it can show how a coach has progressed in his techniques until today,

(PLN) Personal Learning Network

Image result for social work and psychology

Today, I started my personal learning network. First, I had to make a decision, so I combined both Social Work and psychology. This is because, I am not sure which field I will be going into. I spent a few hours searching google, and researching other sites to find professional Social Workers, and psychologist. Also, I searched twitter for expects in my field.

Some of the people that I chose to follow were in the fields of mental health, child abuse, and forensic psychology . These are all the fields I am interested in learning more about. Also, I chose some of these people because they have been in their profession for a long time. In the future they might be able to share some information on these topics with me.

I learned all about new platforms. For example, the thinkspot platform. From these professional blogs, I learned about podcast, how you can promote, and track your podcast. On Dr. Ramani Durvasula blog, I watching a video she posted about narcissistic cults. I learned how a lady overcame being born in a narcissistic cult, and how she over came it in here life by using action. It was interesting because it might be something I will have to deal with in my future career.

One of the challenges I faced building my PLN is not knowing a lot about technology, and what people to chose to follow that would help me to learn more about my career, and how to tape into the global online community of Social Work and psychology.

I neve knew anything about PLN’s before doing this assignment. This assignment forced me to learn about the informational learning environment. The network is full of mentors and discussion groups. I found out that the profession I have followed can enhance my learning in the field that I have chose to purse. There are a large amount of knowledge on peoples blogs. Some of the tools that these professionals can offer are technology, because my skills are lacking in this area.

In the future I can see myself getting some of their professionals books, or these professionals can help me find things online that are related to my profession. It might even help me to learn how to use twitter in a more professional way. Unlike Facebook , there is not that kind of network of professionals on Facebook. On twitter if one person leaves, then there are many more people to fill that void. I think the hardest challenge will be keeping up to date with the people in my field . There are so many people.

Passion Based Independent Project Blog

My passion project is on soccer. First, I will create some pages about the history of the game, how it is played, where it originated from, and what countries are participating in the game. This will create the introduction to my project. I will be looking at what it takes to become successful in the game. What it takes to play it in a physical way and mental way. I will be explaining the training that takes place, all the staff members, and their role in creating a winning team. I will be mainly focusing on the steps taken as a manager to keep the harmony, and ways to build up confidence in the team. I hope this will show me some of the metaphors that are required. My whole role as the manager is to create a group of hungry players by using some of the techniques, I have learned in this class. I will apply what I learned to my players.

I want to create an atmosphere in the dressing room, that is positive on the pitch. This exercise will provide a structure that promotes success. I have many aspects to implement into my players before, I see any fruits. Soccer is an art and needs many different elements including creativity on and off the pitch. My project will be well researched, and only true facts about the game will be presented. My players will start out as amatures, and through different stages will produce an understanding of a system to create a installed passion, belief into their game, and in the end create a winning mentality

My third section will show things that can unstable the mind of the most confident soccer player. I will use some techniques to combat this by using learning skills. That is what I have learned so far in this course. I will show the role of my staff, and how as a team we can work together. Morals is one of the key aspects that most coaches have to work on. I hope to give you a list of ways to combat things that may happen on and off the field, and how one bad apple can destroy all. I will be telling how to not allow the other players to be effected by this. Also, I will be showing training techniques that can help create the atmosphere in the dressing room. Also, I will be researching and listening to different Ted talks related to soccer. As a college student, teacher, and learner its important we move forward with the same goal.

Reflections on hacking/making/play and TED Talks

Hacking is like stepping stones to reach the end goal, but on the way there will be challenges. It is required to achieve a higher degree of learning. Teachers should allow for mistakes, and at first treat them as a mother. Treating her child is allowing for some slip ups. Allow students to be creative and gain experience in toying with new ideas on how to be creative.

This part would fit nicely into Ted’s talk. Getting the classroom together to create a big structure could be one way a teacher could create improvement. Another way is creating ideas and allowing the students to expand. Are there any structure of order in this way. I think just allowing them to be creative, and Teds talk on this subject could allow dialogue with the teacher. This will in turn open up a platform, and the students would grow from this.

Ted’s talks are not just confined to only one subject. Ted talk reaches all student studying different subject. Ted’s talk would be a tool for all teachers to be able to bring the best out of students. It is sooner than would have been if the Ted talk was not shown. Teachers have a part in training themselves into a roll where they allow students to move freely at the start of the course.

Teds talk can enable teachers to be more confident in the process of watching children Play and molding their skills. Creativity can come in different forms not just a Mona Lisa, but in all businesses that want to reach that next level.

My Learning Life

Cooking was my first love. This is until I burnt a pot. Still, it helped me be creative at home. I love to cook a lot of middle eastern food like falafel and Kabob sandwiches. The problem is getting the ingredients living in a town with a population of 250 people, and one shop that sells nothing but junk food. I decided to start growing my own vegetables, herbs, and fruit. Now, we eat for free. This helped me learn about gardening and growing my own stuff.

The Hebrew language is one of the hardest languages that I have learned in life after living in Jerusalem for 10 years. It was a struggle to find work. It goes without saying, if you cant speak the language nobody will hire you. It took sometime to gather a sentence together. Now I can hold a conversation with someone . It was a hard but it helped shaped my character.

10 years I spent buying and selling art glass. I learned a great deal, and know art glass from Edwardian, Victorian, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Retro, and modern. It was a business that made great amounts of money. I got the chance to travel to France, and to see the Lalique factory and Fenton in the United States. Isle of white factory in England and Medina in Malta. Its one of my passions, and I learned all things about Art glass.

The Bible is a tool for me, and a guide on how to live life with empathy for others. Also, I believe the Bible has given me wisdom on how to overcome certain situations, that I have faced in life. No mountain is to big to climb. I have a disability . I have to reach for strength to finish my work. I can do all things in Christ who strengthens me. The Bible has helped me understand history, and where laws came from. The Bible had educated me on my race and tribe. The Bible is food for my soul

Overcoming my disability has been difficult. My partner was the key to my success. He would tell me,” I can do anything, if I put my mind to it.” Although, I felt low self-esteem and lacked any confidence. I attempted the impossible. It has been a struggle in getting there. There are a number of skills I have used to overcome the bad times. Sometimes it means going for a walk. Praying or reading my Bible. These skills have got me through. I have learned a lot in college.
